The best .308 bullet to start reloading ?

The best .308 bullet to start reloading ? This is more for new re loaders . If you are reloading  or hand loading  .308 ammo  your probably looking at an over whelming amount of  bullets to chose from. So where do you start?

Lets start with the basics .  First what is the  twist rate of your rifle ? Most .308 rifles have a 1:10 or 1:11 or 1:12 twist. The next question is  are you shooting a semi auto or a bolt  gun or other. The  last question  , are you hunting or  target shooting  or both ?

Ill give you some bullet weighs . (Small game  rounds ) 110gr , 125 gr (130 gr popular and easy to find )  . (Medium  game deer , black bear ext)  150 gr , 165 gr,  180gr .

 Target   145 gr , 147 gr  150 gr ,  168 gr , 178 gr .

Now there are lots more  bullet weighs out there but this is a few popular ones . You can find 100gr to 220 gr  bullets . So whats the  best to start with ? There has been tones of testing  done and some bullets tend to shine more then others .  lets brake it  down .

If you have a semi auto I wouldn't go  above 150 gr  target or hunting unless the  rifle is designed for for heavier  bullets .

If you have a 1:11 or 1:12 twist id  use:

Hunting  :  150 - 165 gr max .

Target : 150 gr or  155 gr  .

If you have a 1:10 twist you are going to be able to shoot the  big  boys of the stock.

Hunting : 165gr to 180 gr ( The 165 gr are usually  flatter shooting ) .

Target: 150 gr  168 gr  175 gr 178 gr  180 gr.
OK now your saying to your self "Where do I start ? " Ill simplify it a little more . If I had to pick only  ONE bullet  weigh to shoot  it would  be simple  for me .

Semi auto : 150  gr

Bolt : 168 gr  Target . 165 gr Hunting .

If your rifle can shoot them 168 gr is the winner .The 168 gr is well tested for  competition  , hunting ,  target .  The brand ill leave that up too you . Not all rifles can take the 168 gr  reasons  will vary . Old rifles  some semi autos  cant take the high pressures . Be sure to  find out what is safe to shoot out of your  rifle . The twist rate usually  gives it away .

This is just a simple starter . You MUST DO YOUR RESEARCH ! Best to buy a hand loading  manual .  Reloading can be dangerous  so learn as much as you can . Good luck  have  fun  take care .
